About Washoku

Washoku, or traditional Japanese cuisine, is the dietary culture of Japan with two important characteristics. The first element of washoku is a respect for nature by following the seasons and accenting the natural taste of the fresh vegetables rather than overpowering them with various seasonings. The second element is harmony by serving three components of rice, soup, and side dishes that complement one another.

Through the leadership of Isao Kumakura, the director of MIHO Museum in Japan, washoku is now officially listed as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity under the United Nations of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

About Wellness

According to the National Wellness Institute, wellness is considered, “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence”. This definition is based on 3 tenets:

  1. Wellness is considered a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential.

  2. Wellness is multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment.

  3. Wellness is positive and affirming.

In understanding the difference between health and wellness, in short, health is a state of being, whereas wellness is the state of living a healthy lifestyle. Health refers to physical, mental, and social well-being; wellness aims to enhance well-being.
